Matt cannot get a girlfriend and is becoming obsessed by it. Much to the weary disapproval of George - his sardonic flatmate - he tries the personal columns but without success. George is in a relationship he wants out of and can’t understand Matt’s desperation.
It isn’t until he goes to a charity shop in search of fancy dress for his 30th that his prayers seem answered. Serving in the shop is Sam, an angelic blond. He falls hopelessly in love with her and is sent into a flurry of indecision. He’s just too English to ask her out and he is tortured over what to do. It’s painful to watch.
He visits the shop to invite her on a date and fails, leaving with some leaflets she has given him about the work of the charity. After stern instruction from Bella, an old friend, he finally plucks up the courage to ask her round for dinner at his place.
The night of the dinner sees Matt in a fervour of anticipation. Sam arrives late in a long dark coat, clutching the charity leaflets. We suddenly realise that she may not be here for the same reason as Matt.
He introduces her to everyone and begins helping her off with her coat. There is a stunned silence from the table. As she hands the coat over Matt sees her and stops, frozen in a dreadful realisation.
It’s back to the drawing board. Again.
