Like his last film Living in Hope, Guy has produced PPFI as a totally independent production financed without the help of any funding bodies or major network players. It is a truly independent British feature film.
The film was shot entirely on location at Huntsham Court in Devon. Almost all the cast and crew lived together in the house, enabling us to make a feature film in half the usual time expected. It also gave the whole project a genuine family feeling, helping the actors to get even more deeply into their characters.
The UK has become famous for working class drama. In cinema most family drama deals with it, from Ken Loach (Kes, Sweet Sixteen), Mike Leigh (Secret’s and Lies, All or Nothing) to Lynne Ramsay (Morven Caller).
The same is true on TV. Almost every home-grown soap deals with working class themes (Eastenders, Coronation Street, Brookside, Emmerdale). The middle classes are usually portrayed in clichés.
We felt there was a gap in the market for grown-up feature-length drama reflecting real life and racism in the middle class. If anything it is more shocking to discover dysfunction in this strata simply because it is rarely dealt with. And middle class drama often screens very well cf. This Life, Cold Feet etc.
PPFI combines the intensity of Mike Leigh with the richness of the location of Gosford Park. The result is a telling drama that also has a commercial edge.
